[RC] Hunters and riders - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Deb Ambrose mkkgs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== During deer season here next to Ft. Bragg, NC (Sep 15 - Jan 01), the scrub oaks and pines are a-rustle with the optimistic out for chance at a white tail. My usual route up along the edge of the military reservation is out of the question. I put on an orange vest and ride up the rocky rail bed on Sundays, to get to State Forestry lands. Other days of the week I stay in the open on 40 acres in front of our property where I have permission to ride. I trot over every inch of that field, thinking that had to be a half hour! Come to look at my watch--13 minutes have gone by. Last weekend, I rode the edge of the field, heard a truck coming slowly, and saw two gentlemen in orange hanging their heads out to look at tracks coming from my field to their zone. I waved, and they stared back. Then the stink-eye contest was on! Who would look away first? I laughed when I read one post on Ridecamp that said the hunters in our area know the deer are not scared off by the horses. What about my orange drapery and sleighbells and my loud rendition of Oh! Susanna? I never worry about being shot accidentally; I worry about being shot on purpose! Only six more weeks...
