Is the "Ass" a mule or a donkey? That would
certainly change things! Do they ride it or just lead it the whole way?

an annual race called "Last ass over the pass". It is a half marathon
that runners run with a four legged ass. It was started as a loose
re-enactment of the old gold miners racing to town with their gold and their
mules."
