Re: [RC] tom and impressive records - Sky RanchOk, I'll step into the bear trap. Although I admire Tom and all the others who have been out there for a long time, my theory is this: A horse will do all he can, especially if he's pushed to it. How long he lasts in the sport is another thing. There are exceptional horses, exceptional atheletes, and exceptional circumstances. I think horses of "today" are accumulating more lifetime mileages because we know how to care for them more, and yes maybe coddle them more. Why? I'd rather have a horse last for years than set a record for a year or two. You can do research and find the exceptions to the rule, of course!, the horses that did it in spite of what was done to them. So prove me wrong -- what are the stats on earlier horses that were seemingly taken from the pasture (I don't believe that either - they were probably working horses and kept in condition) versus the carefully trained (coddled?) horses of today. Tom and I had many discussions about nutrition and loaders and conditioning, and how there was no substitute for putting the training miles on your horse. I'd like to offer a statistic as proof that you can get astonishing performance from an endurance horse with proper conditioning. Dolly DeCair (the same Dolly who just got hurt recently) never did use anything fancy, as she liked to say. Just trained her horses hard and fast and they got grain and mash, cleaned up and smooched a bunch. In 1988 she rode her stallion Wazir's Karahty on two 100 mile races, one 75 miler, and two 50s in SEVEN WEEKS. He won all 5 races and got BC on three. That was a long time ago but I never see anyone ride like that anymore. Anyone have any ideas why we have so much more to offer our horses now but some ran faster and harder 18 years ago? Just curious. wendy lumbert Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
