Re: [RC] [RC-Digest] 25 or 50 - Sky Ranch

Hi Nancy,

No flames from here. This is actually the conclusion I made after reading
and re-reading the posts... Although I've ridden horses all my life, I
realize I don't have true endurance experience, and so I asked for help.
There have been many, many helpful e-mails from experienced endurance
riders, and I am very thankful for all of the advice. My prime objective is
to protect my horse, my beloved Arabian, who would probably die trying to
carry me however many miles I asked him to do, in my ignorance.

Getting as much 'education' ahead of time is not a bad thing, and I've read
and re-read Julie Suhr's book, Lew Hollander's, Nancy Loving, DVM's book,
and more, and done a lot of riding down the trail, to get ready. I have no
doubt most of the experienced riders are sick of 'newbies' like me asking
questions on "ridecamp", but I'd rather ask ahead of time than arrive at the
"real-camp", not knowing anything.

But here's where we agree! The real bottom line is -- until I actually go
out and start doing endurance riding, I won't know.

If the rider had years and years of long mileage riding and considered
themselves very horse-wise, do ya really think they'd be asking the
question
on ridecamp?
Before everyone takes this the wrong way----I worked at a training barn &
rode and cared for animals every day. Pretty much 24/7 for YEARS. Still
didn't know what I needed to know to prepare a pasture potato go 50 miles
safely. The only way to learn this was to start going to rides, not
training
at home.

But I think an important point here is to differentiate between whether
it is good for HORSES to start right off with endurance distances
versus whether it is good for PEOPLE to start right off with endurance
distances.
