Re: [RC] 50 or 25? - Sky RanchWhat an incredible group of people is on this list. A real-time pool of knowledge - I hope everyone realizes this, and how valuable it is, especially to NEWBIES like me! Thank you for the replies to my naive question, and I DO realize it is naive. But I would also be willing to bet I'm not alone in my question of 'how to start.' Here's my decision, for myself and my horse - I will continue to condition and strive to start at a 50 rather than a 25, because as one person said, why do a 25 when you already know you can go that distance? If I hadn't already been doing ctr's during this past year (we completed 10 novice rides), I wouldn't try a 50 first, but I do have some foundation to start with, and that will definitely help with knowing what my horse can do. You know what, though? If I find that my older horse (he's a 16 yr old Arabian) can't do the 50 and stay sound and happy, then I am very happy that maybe we can do 25's! But then I'll be looking for a younger horse, and to get myself in better condition. I think there's room for all of us in AERC, and I vote to keep them as separate divisions. In the end, I'm definitely still an enthusiastic trail rider, and maybe I think that's what's most important - keep going down the trail! I have the UTMOST admiration for the 100 miler's ... and it's my goal. The way I discovered endurance riding to begin with was the Tevis Cup, which thrilled me and scared me all at the same time. I still hope to ride it. I have a very long way to go, to get to that point.
