The other thing for folks to consider, when looking
at ride times, hold times etc. etc. from region to region, is often the
difference in the type of trail, footing terrain, and even weather
conditions etc. Our local trails at the LBJ Grasslands here in No.
Texas are flat, very easy going, no rocks etc. Much different than say some of
the CA rides that are in the mountains, rocky, and have more technical trail. A
good ride manager working with the vet, will consider the trail and the other
factors like weather etc. when considering the hold times they feel are
appropriate for THAT ride. Yes, one ride may have much less actual available
riding time than another ride, but if calculated right for the trail, all
horses should be able to finish in the time allowed. If a ride has issues with
more than one of two late riders, in any distance, and it being difficult to
finish before the cut off times, either the trail, or hold times need adjusted
for the next years ride.
