Please note that all the horses normally run as a
herd.
1. All the horses shared a common fence with Alysa
(aka Scab) and Superletiw (ada Superfart) until weaning time.
2. One at a time the other horses were introduced
to the pair. Wendy's theory was that mom would protect baby. This
was completely uneventful.
3. When the big day came Superfart and a
couple of geldings were left in the pasture and Scab moved in with the
others. The common gate and fence were set up so that Superfart could not
nurse through the fence. (Extra electric tape on the fence, welded wire covering
on the gate)
Whenever Scab or Superfart got very lonely, they
would call and then Scab could visit across the fence. After a week or
so, things were changed and Scab was alone and Superfart was put in with
the rest of the herd. (three geldings, and two mares)
4. After about 4 months they were all put
together. Superfart tried to nurse a couple of times, but Scab was not
interested.
The whole process seemed to work very well.
There was minimal stress on both parties and the colt learned to live with a
herd.
