The way you are planning to wean your colt is the exact way we did it when
we weaned our Mischief. Only we waited till he was about 6 months
old. His mom was more than happy to get a little distance from him - and
she could still see that he was perfectly fine. It seemed like a much less
stressful situation for both of them than the old traditional way of completely
separating them from each other. Having the other horse in with the young
one provides them the companionship they need, and gives them a "big
brother". Just be sure that the other horse is ok with the situation so
the little one will be safe. I can't remember how long we kept them
separated for sure - but I'm thinking it was around 3 weeks or so? I felt
like us being willing to do things in ways that caused the least amount of
stress has helped Mischief grow into a horse that is very confident in himself
and very comfortable with the world around him. Good luck!
