Bute and pads are comparing apples to oranges.  You would still use a saddle pad to protect the horse's back from the saddle, would you not?  A neoprene hackamore for the sensitive skinned horses?  If while wearing easy boots your horse trots out sound, he is! Simple isn't it?  Runners wear shoes to protect from gravel/pavement etc. Take off your shoes and see what happens.
