YESSS!  Forty years ago, on our first pack trip with 8- and 5-year old 
daughters, we saw the remnants of several pack animals that had gone off the 
trail.  It wasn't a pretty sight (or smell) and the poor kids were very 
upset.  And they were born on a ranch with frequent unpleasant sights of 
animal illness and death, but this was a bit much.  I concur that many 
equines find backpacks very frightening.
