If you sit on a horse with your fingers under the tree of a regular while they do that you'll feel a pinch if it's digging in. The thing is, I don't believe you *can* get a saddle to stay far enough back to avoid that full shoulder rotation. With my OF the shoulder seems to be able to go under the tree without digging and reach farther. I haven't heard anyone admit they look for that but it's about the only way I can see for a shoulder to really have full movement without digging.  Don't get me wrong, I try to keep my saddle back. I added a billet and use a crupper, but that shoulder is able to get back to the area under the tree in a huge trot.
