[RC] Help ! From other farriers and/or vets - Don HustonHello Jody, I've had 4 endurance horses and 3 of them did fine with steel shoes. My latest horse came from the track as a 4yo with sore feet (vet said road founder) and two splints from workouts on a hard surface track. I tried for 2 years to heal his feet and ride in steel but it wasn't working. Good some days and off the next, usually the right front? maybe? So 3 years ago I pulled his shoes and started using Old Macs because they have way more sole protection than Easy Boots and that's what my horse needed. The horse now has excellent feet and will walk (never asked for a trot) on any and all rocky stuff barefoot without showing any tenderness. He has done 1000+ miles of 25's and 50's with Old Macs and could be placed back in steel shoes but frankly it is way cheaper to trim him myself and use boots to race. The point here is you could go barefoot for a while and use boots to condition and ride while your horse's feet heal then go back to steel. Just a suggestion that has worked for me.
