RE: [RC] [RC] locking stifle problems? - Kristen A FisherLucy - I just read an article in Equus about this condition - "Solutions for Locked Stifles Equus 333". The article was a good overview with diagrams about the mechanics of the problem and various treatment options. There is a new procedure that has been quite successful [so far] that involves partially cutting the ligament [ligament "splitting" vs. completely severing it, or blistering it] that will produce a similar thickening of the ligament as blistering would. Only a handful of vets do it yet so yours may not be familiar with it. I would encourage you to track down that article! I'd fax it to you but it's already in the recycle bin. God luck with Zini. My vet considered this treatment to be a less aggressive way to start. He said this will fix some horses, but more often than not, it doesn't. :( Assuming her condition doesn't improve, he talked about going a step further by blistering the ligaments with iodine to cause them to tighten up (?). We discussed the treatment that many people opt for, where the ligaments are cut, but he said although this sorts a horse out in the short term, more often than not, he sees the horse back in his clinic a few year later suffering from arthritis. So that's useful to know. The blistering apparently does a similar job, but without the side effects. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
