Re: [RC] alfalfa in distance horses - Sky RanchI would warn anyone with a horse that is HYPP positive, or a HYPP carrier, to not feed alfalfa. We had a young 2 year old QH mare that was a HYPP carrier (HYPP N/H). Normally we did not (and do not) feed alfalfa to our horses, but my husband threw her one flake one morning on his way out to feed the goats. She was down in about an hour, and could not move. It was extremely frightening. She did eventually get up, right before our vet arrived, and appeared alright, only to go down again in about 3 hours. Same thing, she stayed down unable to get up, for about an hour, then recovered. We never fed her alfalfa again, and she never had any more episodes. Apparently young horses with HYPP are more susceptible to these episodes of paralysis than are older horses. The high potassium and protein content of alfalfa can cause problems -- especially if it's a sudden diet change as in the case of our filly (my husband now knows not to do that!!) Unless of course the horse is sensitive to it, which I've heard some are (though fortunately I haven't had to deal with that). So your 1/4 flake should be fine. I am still just doing LD's but I do feed my mare alfalfa, not a lot, about 1/4 flake once a day. I was just on NATRC site and they were talking about not feeding alfalfa to distance horses. I know everyone has their own way to feed, but what is the general consensus.
