Re: [RC] Fractured Ribs- healing time - Debbie ParsonsLast February, I broke 4 ribs in a crash--one when I hit the ground when my horse did an exit stage left at a strong canter when he spied a prehistoric petrified giant forest wood snake (silly me, I thought it was a log), and then 3 more when I failed to release the reins and spun him around so he was able to use my chest as a springboard in his flight to save his life. I had that popping/movement thing going on where the 3 were broken (4,5,&6 on the left side). Turned out they were broken in 2 places on each. Of course, this happened at about mile 21 of a 55 ride. With help, I got back on and finished that loop and actually got through the next; ended up pulled after my horse slipped and strained a hind leg muscle when the ground opened up under him as we were walking through some water. Just wasn't our day! It also had to be the furthest ride from home I'd done and one to which I had traveled alone. It was a long 300 miles to home! Don't be surprised if you find yourself hurting more during the 2nd week. It will ease back up. Take it easy and don't rush back to doing all the things we independent-minded horsewoman do. Anti-inflammatory medications are your friend and you may benefit from some muscle relaxers to help calm those intercostal muscles. And keeping a pillow handy to hug when coughing or sneezing helps decrease the pain in those instances and keeps you from blurting out things that you might not ought to say! I stayed off a horse for about 8 weeks, mainly because my co-workers would have beaten me had I taken another spill so soon plus I was sore for a long time (I'm a nurse who works in a primary care clinic; I don't think I could take any more laughter from my docs anyhow!).
