Re: [RC] [RC] Polo "Ponies", foxhunting, economics - Maryanne Gabbani
I remember a teacher at the German school in Alexandria who used to ride with one of the polo guys at our club. Mustafa had a fantastic stallion who raced flat track in the summer and played? polo in the winter. One day Agnes asked to learn to play polo so Mustafa loaned her his stallion and said "He'll teach you" handing her a mallet and a ball. And sure enough he did. We all fell all over the field with laughter as this wonderful old gent would gallop up to the ball and then stop dead so that Agnes could try to hit it.? It was brilliant. I loved that stallion.

I have played polo and been a polo groom. It is an amazing game and I wish I could have done it more. However I was horrible! I have no hand eye coordination when it comes to making the mallet connect with that ball...I was whiffing all the time. But what fun to gallop up and down the field riding other players off the ball...bumping, turning, and full out again. It is intense and does take alot of training for both horses and rider. When I was a groom I spent most of my time short tracking the string of ponies. basically running them up and down and praticing roll backs, stops, quick changes of direction ect. It was fun!
