RE: [RC] Trailer Advise - Rae CallawayI have both. A 2 horse straight load bumper and a 3 horse slant load gooseneck with LQ. At the moment, both trailers have ramps, but I want to replace the 2 horse with another straight load without a ramp. True, in the small straight loads, the horse must learn to load itself, as unless you have a walk through, you're not going to be able to lead the horse in. I teach my horses in both trailers. I feel this keeps them well rounded, so if we ever get pulled at a ride where the vet check is away, they'll be able to load in whatever type of trailer shows up to take us back to camp. My LQ is new. Before that I had a plain, carpeted dressing room. (before that I tent camped with the 2 horse). Tent camping is fun, but there's work involved when you arrive to get the thing set up, plus, for me, getting that air mattress filled and hope it stayed filled long enough for me to get some good sleep! Rainy rides weren't too fun because you ended up tracking in a lot of water & mud and all your stuff gets to smelling lovely. The dressing room trailer was great. I had a mattress up in the gooseneck and it virtually eliminated set up time for my comfort. I also had a chemical toilet in the trailer for those wee hours potty breaks (winding your way through a dark, horse pen filled ridecamp to find the porta-pot can be dangerous! <g>). I now have a small LQ. It went on it's inaugural trip this past weekend. I didn't get to test it in rain (Armadillo was weird this year!), but found it's REALLY nice to have a stove & table inside so that I wasn't heating up coffee and warm water for the horse's mash outside shivering in the cold morning. Small note about the refrigerator: don't put it on the highest level. I woke up to find my 55 ounce water bottle frozen solid! (at least it proves it works!) I like the walk through door to the horse section, although I think it's main use is going to be for those rainy rides. We'll use that as a back door to drop off all the muddy shoes/clothes upon entering the LQ, as it goes through the bathroom first. I like a slant load because you can walk in with each horse, tie'em, close the partition, walk in the next, etc. without needing an escape door. I would get a small living quarters right away if you can afford it cause you will be much more comfortable. I bought a TrailsWest because it seemed very well made, rubber on the floor, walls, rear door, very solid divider (2 horse), 25gal water tank, thick epoxy paint, lots of lights, 4 wheel electric brakes, add a high-tie of some kind on each side and you are set. These babies are heavy (8000lbs with 2 horses and gear for my trailer) so you need a heavy duty truck.
