[RC] Selling (buying) horses - Karen Casemier

I'll chime in here with a buyer's perspective that will hopefully offer encouragement to sellers.

First, I'm not in a position to buy right now... not just financially, but I have two horses who need to be worked, and a full time job...

But, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, I'll be looking for an endurance horse. I have a mare I love riding who is sound as the day is long, beautiful, comfortable ride, brave, and just does not have the mental temperament for the sport. Personally, if I could find a sound, sane horse that I could relax on and have fun with, $3500 isn't just reasonable, I would consider it a bargain. And I'm not talking about winning rides. I'm talking about just completing rides in one piece, with a minimum of stress. Heck, after what I've been through with horses, I consider $3500-5000 for a horse who has demonstrated a great attitude and trainability, even if he hasn't won a single ride, a steal. Of course, I have absolutely no money right now, so it's easy to say that ;>)

If anything, this conversation actually gives me a lot of hope that I will be able to find MY dream horse for a price I can afford. I realize there are other riders who place more importance on winning over and over... or to having a flashy horse that other people admire. But to me, a horse that I enjoy riding and who has enough of a brain that I can actually have FUN with, well, that is something I don't think I can even put a dollar amount on. Life is too short. Have a riding accident that almost kills you, and see if you don't agree.

Obviously, a lot of these bargain hunters have never had serious accident, or never been scared by the goofy things young horses do, or never had to spend a weekend trying to teach a sour horse to load, or had the general frustrating experience of trying to undo the poor handling a "bargain" horse has received.

So, sellers, take heart. The buyers you are looking for are out there... they are probably all just broke at the moment like me ;>)
