[RC] Breeders own horses too (was: selling horses) - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxxDonna Coss said: why *should* or *would *anyone establish a breeding farm, when they have to compete with the low-dollar, giveaway prices! Because they get enjoyment out of breeding quality horses even if they never make a dime at it, even, in fact, if it costs them millions of dollars to do so. There is no shortage of people who fit this description, there are, in fact, some people who are third and fourth generation of doing this. If you look at all the long standing, well established breeding programs, they are either rich people who make money doing something else, or they are government studs. The proper question to be asked is, "Why do some breeders seem to think that they are the only horse owners who ought to make money owning horses, while all other horse owners are expected to spend it?" Horse owners don't make money owning horses. Horse owner SPEND money owning horses. I am so sick and tired of horse breeders moaning about how much their hobby is costing them, and complaining that other horse owners are unwilling to finance it for them. If you want to make money at a hobby, you have to be really, really, really, really good (or a crook). Because you have to compete with people who are willing to lose money at it forever. Breeding horses is the MOST expensive aspect of the horse owning hobby, and ought not be engaged in by people who can't afford it. The money losing aspects of horse breeding are not helped by the fact that there ARE people who are stupid enough to think that they can make money at it, so they start a breeding program, lose money at it, and have to sell their horses for fire sale prices just to get out from under the cost of their expensive hobby, that they can't afford. Breeding horses is a rich man's entertainment, and there is no shortage of rich people willing to entertain themselves in this way. The Queen of England and an assortment of oil sheikhs come to mind. I have no sympathy for people who whine that they thought they could make money at it when virtually nobody else does. There is no money in owning horses, horse OWNERS are where the money COMES from in the horse business. And horse breeders are owners too. If you want to breed horses, do it because you enjoy it. If you do it because you think you can make money at it, you have just made yourself part of the "over breeding" problem. Some "breeders" may also whine that they have to get properly compensated for what they do, because if not, people will stop doing it. All I can say to this is, "it hasn't happened so far." But if it ever does, THEN people who want to make money at it can enter the market. So far, there has been no shortage of people who are either willing to lose money at it indefinitely or are too stupid to know that they are going to lose money at it and either go bankrupt or stop doing it when they finally do figure out that there is no money it. Or, of course, there are some people who are really, really, really, really good...or are crooks (and some people who go through crookedness on their way from stupidity to bankruptcy :)), but most people are just hobbiests, and even if they aren't they have to compete with people who are, some of whom also happen to be really, really, really, good. So even being good is no guarantee. :) kat Orange County, Calif. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
