Re: [RC] Mystery virus in horses - Maryanne GabbaniThat would make sense except that the horses in question are all at different stables all over the Cairo area and aren't getting the same feed. This morning Halim is calm, hungry, drinking lots of water (for which we are very, very grateful) and pooping what looks like fairly normal stuff given that he's been through hell over the past 48 hours. We don't feed oats here because we'd have to import them and they are too expensive. The horses here get whole barley, bran, chopped hay...for the most part. Depending on the stable owner's preference, they may get an additional pelleted feed (only two varieties available here and both locally made...most people don't use them) in addition. In our stables (those managed by Morad) the barley is soaked, left on a fire to heat and swell, then drained and dried a bit before feeding. That gets rid of most of the sand and dust. If the horses are getting whole oats check for any slight coloration in the grain. Generally it will be a very light almost not there pink. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
