Okay now you are scaring me. We have a barrel racing horse that clicks at the
walk - farrier said it was okay as long as he doesnt at the trot. He doesnt at
the trot. I noticed after the last shoeing that the left rear shoe extends
past the his hoof wall - not a lot, but a little. Is that what you are talking
about "running the shoe under the heels?">

No. Curling the shoe under the foot so you can't see it from straight above.
There should be more shoe than foot all the way around the foot--should be able
to roll a nickel all the way around the foot on the shoe.

You guys talk about going thru lots of farriers. We have, like, *one* decent
one here. People say that is why they do their own. My question is - can you
take a couple of courses and be qualified to trim a horse - or do you just end
up thinking you are?

Like Ed, you end up thinking you are, courses or not. However, basic shoeing
principles are pretty easy to understand. The very first thing you need to
learn to do is measure angles and toe lengths.
