Re: [RC] giving horse time off - Carolyn BurgessI like to give my guys a break, especially if they have been competing heavily. Winter is usually the time since at somepoint, I never know when, our trails won't be ridable due to ice. So then end up on light duty for 6 - 8 weeks, usually February into March. And depending on how crappy a winter, that can extend (not by choice) into March. I'll still ride them, but it is shorter rides and more walking just to get them out and get the exercise. Then we start reconditioning them late February, early March, as soon as the footing allows. Do you think a young horse (six) needs the winter off? My guy has been in conditioning for about 14 months. Thought I would give him a few months off. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
