My stud (who will be gelded next month due to me moving) lives on 5 acres in 
a herd with 2 mares and 2 geldings. He is very well mannered whether in the 
pasture or when I take him out of it. He's been in this living situation 
since he was a yearling (he's 3 1/2 now). He's not agressive at all about 
the mares and yes he has bred them. One of the geldings is higher in the 
pecking order and one is lower than him. Both are older than him so maybe 
that makes the difference.
