Since moving to an area where grass hay is extremely unreliable as to quality, I've been feeding alfalfa cubes (not pellets) as a supplement to the hay ration. For a horse that doesn't drink a lot or may not chew as well, I soak the cubes for just a few minutes before feeding. They still get normal amounts of grass hay with their alfalfa, though. I've heard that horses fed exclusively on the cubes tend to chew on things more (fences, stalls, etc.) and may develop boredom related vices more readily. I've not seen this issue when the cubes are used as a supplement or as a partial replacement of long stemmed forage when hay is in short supply, however. The small pelleted alfalfa that is commonly fed to rabbits is processed differently than the cubed alfalfa, and I've been told it's not as good for horses. I'd advise looking up the different forms of bagged/pelleted/cubed/chopped alfalfa prior to making a decision. ~S =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
