2. I bought a light wgt barrel racing saddle that had smooth
leather (which I hate) & took a small hand drill & put a piece of rough
sandpaper on it & created a “roughout” saddle on the jockeys
& fenders (took 20 minutes & you can’t tell that the saddle wasn’t
supposed to look like that)!
3. The Western barrel saddle has a “beartrap”
pommel which really does help keep you in (replaces the need for Bucking Rolls,
see below). This is not the saddle I have, but is a pic of the Beartrap pommel:

5. Another option is to buy English half-chaps with suede on
the inner side of the calf for grip (& the rest is cordura for lightness): you
can find them on eBay from a company called Equiteric, do a Goggle search for
them. I have bought many things from them & they are very reasonable in
price. My hubby is 5’11”, 185#, 34” inseam & took a “Large”
from them in these.
6. Don’t know what type of saddle you have, but these
are easy to put on if you have a small pommel on a western saddle… Bucking
Rolls (kind of like Poleys in an Aussie saddle): http://www.outwestsaddlery.com/html/bucking_rolls_for_sale.html
you just unscrew the saddle’s screw in front, put these on &
reattach. Takes 5 min.
For the real thing you are looking for, Millers used to make
these jeans with ultrasuede. But they went out of business & I have never
been able to find them.
