I'm assuming they did,  I saw one horse a bay, that was riderless and being held by the reins, prior to the start.  I thought to my self.. "I don't think that is such a good idea", but I never saw the riderless horse running around.  So I don't know if it was the same one. 
 
I was watching the start and taking photos, sorry for the poor quality, I don't do digital, and was really surprised that the horses were so calm.  I've seen much worse at our local rides at home! 
 
My horse included!
 
 I did hear that on the first loop, there were a few folks dismounted in the desert, their horses running off, with multiple vehicles trailing after them.  I didn't hear how far the horses went before they were caught.
