[So_Cal_Endurance] Re: [RC] [RC] Why not more 100's? - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: kim kimfue@xxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Terry and anyone else interested, What Dabney wrote below is true. Both of the PS 100 mile rides, 20 MT & Californios, both loop back to basecamp. Both of these rides have very safe trail for riding in the dark. The course at Californios is set up so that everyone is finished with 99% of the single track trail before dark. I have ridden both rides without crew and it wasn't a problem. 20 MT has one of the 1 hr holds back in basecamp anyway. It makes it nice because I believe this is at the 65 mile point and you don't have to send your night gear out with a crew bag. If you are worried about getting lost don't leave the vet check without a riding buddy. I have not had a problem with the markings at both these rides after dark. I know that 20 MT sometimes has a reputation for poor marking but I did not find that the last time I rode it. I rode the last 35 mile loop by myself in the dark and didn't get lost and I am not the best at following trail even when it is perfectly marked. Dabney made a very good point in one of her posts to this list. Ride managers are not going to put on 100s if riders do not support that distance. I know there are PS riders out there that do not aspire to ride more then 50 miles and have no desire to enter a 100 and the following comments are not for them. But I know there are lots of riders that want to ride 100s sometime but just never get around to it for whatever reason. None of us really know if our horses are fit enough for a 100 until we actually compete at that distance. Even if you enter and don't finish the 100 mile distance you will get an idea if your horse is 70 miles fit, 80 miles fit, 90 miles fit and be able to adjust your training/conditioning program so that your horse will be better prepared for the next 100. A non completion on your horse's record is not a failure if it helps you pinpoint your horse's weaknesses or holes. It gives you an opportunity to train/condition so you can take your horse to the next level of endurance the next time a 100 mile ride is offered. The timing of 20 MT in February really does give riders an opportunity to see where their horse is at and then have a few months to fine tune your training/conditioning for the Summer 100s like Californios, Tevis, and Swanton. Crews are not necessary; you only have to have your trailer moved at Tevis not the other 100s; and you're much less likely to get lost because (a) you're going slower so you have time to look for markings, and (b) at night glow bars are easier to spot than those ribbons are in the daytime! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
