Re: [RC] [RC] what to do with horses after owner dies - Dyane SmithHorses end their lives at feedlots for many reasons, but one is just such a scenario, except that the horse goes to auction where he/she is purchased by a killer buyer. Most breed organizations will have a history of who owned the horse that they'll gladly tell you, along with last known address, and even phone number, sometimes. (With Morgans, it is right on the second page of the papers.) Offer the horses back to any one of the previous owners. Offer the horses back to their breeder--particularly if it is a mare. Many's the exceptionally-bred mare who was sold by her breeder to what she thought was a producing home, only to have the horse change hands and descend the ownership ladder into obscurity. For Morgan fans, the best mare Mabel Owen ever bred--a mare who had won major Park Saddle championships in New England--ended up in some teenager's backyard in rural New Brunswick when the owner died and the estate's executor was absolutely clueless about who/what the mare was. The teenager kept the mare in poor stabling conditions and she ended up being put down after she broke a leg when a stud tied 3 feet away from her tried to climb over the gelding between them to get to her and fell on her. There were half a dozen people in New England who would have paid well into five figures for that mare. It broke Mabel's heart when she found out. The exceptional case, of course, but you never know... Linda B.
