Re: [RC] rearing horse when saddling - Born CountryHoo-boy! Does THAT ring a bell. I had a similar issue with Chagalle, but discovered (several years later after we had worked out a compromise) that a previous owner had used a saddle that pinched his back. She KNEW it hurt him, yet continued to use it. He finally rebelled. This issue followed him to me. Now when we put the saddle on, and he is allowed to walk in a circle around me. He has learned to come up to me when he is ready for it to be tightened a little more. I cinch him up slowly. After each tightening of the cinch, he gets a treat. He has learned the routine and accepts it quietly. I use a BMSS that works great. Treats work great, too. I have a waterbottle holder snapped on the front of the saddle which I put his treats in. Only drawback is when we are out on the trail and he hears velcro, he immediately stops and turns his head for his treat! Can I have some different training ideas from all of you? My first inclination is to pull him all the way over, however it takes two of us to cinch (we do this very gently by the way) and I worry for the safety of both us. He is not sore on his back, but I have no history or background on him at all. However he is a sweetheart in all other areas.
