[RC] Allergy Bumps? - LisaHi, My friend Suzi's 8 yo Arab mare is having significant problems with bumps that appear pretty much everywhere but on her legs. They are dime-sized, hard and itchy, and will eventually seep if not treated. There is no hair loss. Though it's rare, the mare has become lethargic and off her feed when she has the bumps. The bumps first occurred late last fall, and then again early this summer. Both times they were treated with a couple of different steroids -- In the fall the bumps disappeared but back they came in the summer, though this time with the same treatment the bumps didn't quite disappear; and now they are creeping back, even with the meds. Suzi doesn't wish to use the steroids long-term since they can cause founder, plus it seems their effectiveness is lessening. Our understanding is allergy testing via blood or skin can be inaccurate (false negatives/positives). Has anyone ever done allergy testing on their horse and was it effective? Do the bumps sound like they may be coming from some other source? Suzi is feeding the same hay and using the same fly spray, so doesn't seem like it might be a food source? ANY IDEAS OR FEEDBACK MOST WELCOME! Please reply to me directly as Suzi does not have email. Thank you!
