Re: [RC] crack/line hoof - Barbara McCraryOne possibility could be an injury to the coronet, which would cause the crack to continue growing as the hoof grows. I have had an injury (unremembered) to the cuticle (equated to the coronet on a horse) of one thumb, and as the nail continues to grow out the crack is always there, and always will be. Nothing shows on the cuticle at all, but the growth pattern with the crack remains. In the past, when we had a horse or horses that had a vertical crack, our farrier burned a triangle at the end of the crack to stop it from opening up further, but it sounds like your farrier has done something similar with a wedge. If the crack doesn't widen, perhaps it is not a problem. I offer no solution, only information.
