[RC] ACL (the shoulder one) - sandy . l . holder

Heh Carol,

Well I have experience in both the areas you asked questions about.  5 years ago I 'dismounted unexpectedly' when the 4 year old greenie I was riding was kicked at and he decided to jump sideways into a ditch.  I subsequently was 'given' 2 new ligaments, including the Acromioclavicular Ligament.  Oh, and they 'fixed' my rotator cuff too. . . 4 weeks of my arm attached directly to my side, 2 weeks where I could actually loosen it a bit, 2 weeks of PT and I was riding again.  I could have gotten back on after 6 weeks but my doctor suggested 'caution' so I waited an extra couple of weeks.  I have full and total rotation/use of my left arm and shoulder - no clicking, etc..  You would never know except for the fine white line that I ever had surgery.

My daughter a year ago had impingement where they nipped off the end.  She'd been a butterflyer (swimmer) as a youngster and really was exceptional - but this leads sometimes to the shoulder being impinged.  She was fully back at it about a month later but probably could have been sooner but we again wanted to be cautious.

Is your doctor a sports medicine specialist?  If so, they generally really know their stuff.  Take his/her advice but healing right the first time is really the key.  I'd say give your body at least 4 weeks to heal.  I've heard that if you completely heal, the chances for issues later is life are reduced.  JMHO.

All the best,
Sandy
