Generally this is true - not always - but certainly indicates a higher level of importance put on the horses going the longer distances.>>

Gads...I'd hate to think that this is the norm!  I've ridden both LD and 50s in CT region, and have never seen or experienced LD riders being treated differently, or being "set aside" as less important than the longer distance riders.

<< In the main, over the years, outside of the group who seem to be kamikazi riders no matter the distance, more and more LDers are most competent (whether they choose to be dolts or not is another matter) and don't take more time from the vet staff.

Here in CT region it seems to vary from ride to ride.  At some rides, many (most?) of the LDers are experienced, with few first-timers.  We have one or two of the "kamikazi" riders that we can count on to show up at pretty much every ride - they basically push the gas pedal to the floor and keep it there no matter what, with the single-minded goal of being "first."  The rest of the experienced LDers tend to ride pretty much in accord with the terrain, weather, etc.  At other rides, there might be a large number of first-time riders in the LD.  I know at the two-day ride we put on last April, we had a lot of first-timers on day one.  They just wanted to try out the sport and see what it was all about.  We also had an intro ride, but still had quite a few first timers give the 25 mile LD a shot.  Quite a few were OT, but I'd rather see that than see them push their horses too hard to make the time cut off.
