Re: [RC] Killer Bees - Sisu West Ranch"...killer bees..."I don't know about Africanized "killer" honey bees, as they have not reached our area yet, but we do have stinging insect problems here and they are potential killers. By this time of year the population of wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and other members of the wasp family hits its peak. People often refer to them (incorrectly) as bees. Never good natured, they become really nasty after the first couple of frosts when their food becomes hard to find. Some of them live in holes in the ground. When you ride up a creek, theys ometimes swarm out of their hole, which is on or right next to the trail and sting the poor horse or mule that is nearest. Most equines then run blindly in a random direction. If you are lucky, it is not off of the cliff or into you after your equine departed the scene in a bucking fit. The best defence is to know where they are and go through the area at speed. Most horses then will just speed up when stung, and also suffer fewer stings.
