Re: [RC] tens; now 100 milers w/ high suspensories - Dabney Finch

Ok.  Look up Orzo's history on AERC to be forewarned about what you might have to live through with a 100 mile horse with an old high suspensory injury.

Orzo was a classic high suspensory waiting to happen--big horse; beautiful (seemingly effortless) big trot.  (As Barbara McCrary pointed out recently, that seems to be the type that gets suspensory problems.)

He'd get sore in the high suspensories after a couple of months of conditioning/competing.

I'd give him some months off (and tried things like going more slowly downhill and cantering more) and he'd do beautifully for a while (see ride history).

Eventually, however, the soreness would come back.

I kept rehabing him because he adored endurance (he was a trifle lazy as well as innately talented and forward and so made good time while still having awesome HRs and not being at all tired at the end of a ride--seemed to love showing off to get another BC) and most importantly he was the most fun horse I've ever been with in a ride!

Dick Dawson and his wife  own him now, and are taking on the challenge of seeing if they, being more conservative--and no doubt smarter--riders than I, will be able to keep him sound.

I would so love for them to show me up!

So, I guess my advice (after all that) is--don't do what I did and keep posted with Dick Dawson!

I've been getting real mixed responses privately. Very slightly favoring recovery but no one has said that a 100 miler was made after this type of injury or said that a 100 miler has recovered to 100 mile competition after it. Curious to know if the are any 100 milers out there who had a Hx of high suspensory tear.
Thanks so much for everyone's input, good and bad. I appreciate it all.
Sincerely,
Amy
