[RC] Re : Stifle problem - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: beth caglehead10@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== My Stifle experience goes like this : My 14 yr old Gelding,s stifle started "slipping " when He was 7 years old . Had Vet Out, He said to do some Hill work, that strengthens the Muscle . Months later , It was still a Problem . So Vet said , Lets do the surgery . Fine, we scheduled the appointment , I am very weary of having to do any kind of surgery before I,ve tried all other options. Sooooo.... I consulted a Leg Specialist ( My vet was a little perturbed I would consult with ANOTHER ),anyway, The Specialist said Surgery should always be the LAST option for this type of problem becouse Once you cut the Ligament , It is done, there is no going back and sometimes the surgery does,nt Fix the Problem anyway. Once you cut the Ligament, the Horse is no longer capable of Locking His Leg , as they need to do when sleeping standing up . He suggested trying the Injections. I called My Vet back, canceled the surgery and scheduled for the Injection . Had the Injection done, I will say that it was a rough couple days for My Boy ,Did some quality time Hand walking and cold hosing for a couple days till the swelling went down , then started riding again , and went back to the Hill work . His Stifles Did slip a few more times , But it happened less and less often . I will tell you that in the last 7 years it has probably happened twice . Had He still had a bad problem with it, I would of eventually done the surgery, but I sure am glad I made the choice of doing the Injections first . good luck, Beth =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
