RE: [RC] Automatic Waterers - heidiAnother concern with automatic waterers is power outages. I have 80 gallon troughs in each of my 3 pastures so when we have no power to pump water from the well, we still have a few days supply of water. When that runs out, we can scoop from the pool & carry buckets to the troughs. Doesn't matter for us, with a well, whether it is an automatic waterer or not, if the power goes out. Still have to fill the tanks, too. Granted, the ones on the automatics run out sooner, as there is a smaller reservoir. But with the number of horses we have here, my backup is a little Honda pump with a water pickup that will go into the river, and a bed tank that can go onto the truck. Unless we have a winter outage when the river is too frozen, we can always go down and pump up 300+ gallons and bring it back up to the horses. We have an underground pressure tank, and all of the electrical controls for the pump are down in the underground chamber with it. We put a drainfield out of it to help keep moisture from building up in it after we had the controls corrode a couple of times and need to be replaced. Had the water go off last week, and thought dang, we'd solved that problem. Turned out a mouse had crawled into the control and had electrocuted himself, shorting out the control box in the process. <sigh> Always something.
