RE: [SPAM] [RC] Automatic Waterers - heidi

We are researching automatic waterers to install in our field. Right now I am
leaning to the traditional with the small heated basin that fills
automatically. My husband noticed an ad for one called "horsedrinker", you
can see it at www.horsedrinker.com

This one does not use electricity so there is no danger of shocking the
horses, plus less of a hassle to install. The drawback is the water basin is
not full all the time. The animals must bump a pad on the bottem to fill the
pan, then the water drains out again so it doesn't freeze. We have horses and
cattle and I'm concerned there will be some in the bunch that won't figure
out how to get water out of it. Is anyone using this waterer? Thanks

I don't like the sort they have to bump, either in hot weather or cold
weather. A hot "pad" to bump is a turn-off, and so is one that is
frosty.

Here where we get temps into the sub-zero range in winter, I MUCH prefer
those with an electric heat source. We have Brower waterers in some of
our pastures, and we just love them. The water "bowl" sits in sort of
a cabinet, and the inflow is controlled by a float that has a cover
over it so the horses can't mess with it. There is a thermostat probe
in the water, but the heat source is down in the cabinet part, and just
keeps the air in there warm. We turn the electricity off completely to
the tanks in the summer, and leave it off until we get enough cold to
make a skim of ice on the tanks. But I don't see how a properly
installed one could possibly shock the horses, since the power is not
connected to the tank itself and the whole unit is properly grounded.
50-degree water in winter is REALLY an inducement to drink more--some
don't drink enough when the water is icy. In summer, the water doesn't
get warm, either, since there is enough traffic to the waterers to keep
cool water coming in regularly. I wouldn't trade for the sort that the
horse has to nose a pad to get water for anything.
