[RC] towing, balls etc. - Jonni----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Ann Spencer Also, my 4 horse bumper pull is 2" ball. Maybe different parts of US do it differently. <<< Location or region has nothing to do with it. Hitch balls are selected by gross trailer weight rating , and its rating, etched on top of the ball, relates to the thickness of the ball's threaded shaft; the thicker it is, the more weight it can take. Depending on the trailer manufacturer, and what size coupler they put on the trailer, and what the trailers potential "weight" would be loaded (the class of trailer), would be what determines the size of the ball . The 2 5/16 balls are usually rated to 10,000 pounds. The 2" balls are usually only up to 5000 pounds. With 4 horses in my trailer, and the trailer weight itself, I am quickly over the 5000 pounds, so in my case, Circle J, put on a 2 5/16" coupler. Look at the top of your ball, for the weight it is rated to. (if you can still read it, many wear off with use) One should never tow more, than the lowest rating on the components. That being, if your ball is only rated to 5000 pounds, you should not tow more than that. The receiver, ball, hitch, and vehicle are all components that should meet the weights that you will tow. Just like trucks, you can not have too "much" hitch to tow your load, but you can have one that is too light.
