Doing some research I came across a book by Edwin Tunis, "Colonial 
Times" which you can see the cover at Amazon.com.  Superimposed on this 
cover he has a picture showing two colonials actually doing a ride and 
tie! (Puritans??)

Within the text he describes this "way of going." He mentions that there 
were not many horses then and it was a practical method of transportation.

This author is a great illustrator and his other book on "Frontier 
Living" gives much info about endurance and life in the west similar to 
any of the Duck's multiday events....
