[RC] Spider bite cause of abscess? - Claire Nystrom

Last weekend a horse at work got had a lump on his hindquarters,
throughout the day it grew larger-- to the size of a cantaloupe. By
the next morning, puss was oozing out of it and hair had fallen out.
It eventually got a larger raw part and more puss. Neither my boss or
I had ever seen anything like it and we could not identify a cause for
it. The horse is on private turnout and never comes into contact with
another horse, so it is impossible that he got kicked. We spoke with
the vet over the phone and she had us put him on SMZs and put panalog
ointment on it. The area is still very swollen and continues to ooze
puss and more hair has fallen out. It does look a little more dried
up though and has scabs on it. It does not seem to affect anything
other than that area and he seems to be acting normal. His owner is
riding him and he seems fine. This happened to a friend of mine's
horse at a different farm las week also and the vet seems to think
that it's a spider bite. It seems to me that this is very likely
based upon some stuff I've read on-line. I just wanted to find out if
this has happened to anyone else's horse and if they could give me
some more info about it. Based upon what I've read, it doesn't seem
as if much can be done for it and we'll just have to wait until it
heals.

Thanks,
Carol
