Re: [RC] Training advice - Jo Ann Knight

Yes and my mare did me the honor of "running" backwards! May not really
call it a run, but she went faster than I have ever seen a horse move
backwards, and I had witnesses. She was quite young, and just beginning
socialization, along with her numbskull mom! I was at a drafting clinic
hoping to introduce her to cows, drafting and eventually team penning so I
could be around other horse people doing stuff I did as a kid.

Well, at a break, they were changing the cows (they were heffers(sp?) three
or four of them. It was a windy day. The water was next to the corral. I
figured Aysha needed a drink so I walked her up to the water trough and also
figured this would be a good way to get her closer in a non threatening
situation. OH if I only knew! She didn't drink, she just watched the cows
go into the barn, then as she was about to drink the barn door loudly banged
against the barn and here came 4 more young heffers charging straight for us
I guess someone wanted them to move out fast! Aysha was convinced she was
about to be devoured! So back she went and I mean fast. I know how to deal
with a runaway, but this was not in my experience. I should have just done
a wow and put the reins to her neck. But I didn't think! So as I felt like
she was about to run over her own back end, I turned her and unfortunately I
chose to turn her right which is not a good idea for me because I was having
knee problems with the left knee and it did not always stay with the stirrup
had I turned left I would have made more of a connection with that foot.
Anyway the bottom line is she did a fast roll back and I landed in the dust.
Then she comes back to me like---OH gee ma, you ok, what happened where did
you go? She has since learned she can make the cows afraid of her. But
since she is retired due to lamness she can't do cattle work nor trail work!
Luckily I have traded in both knees now and don't have that problem!

Well just thought I would mention that they can and sometimes do go
backwards very fast.

Jo Ann

Horses will go forward, sideways, up and down
on their own, but have you ever seen a horse
playing,
fighting or just walking "backwards?" >>

Certainly. They'll back into each other agressively
to kick or threaten to kick (often backing quite
fast). They'll back to rub on another horse (or tree
or fence). Mares will back into stallions when in
heat (some mares will back quite a distance to be sure
he gets the point).
