[RC] Swanton RAT - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxxFrank said: Did they have "holds" during the RAT? If so, how long, how many,,,,,for THEM or for the HORSE? There are no mandatory holds in a RAT. It is entirely up to the discretion of the people how, where, and to what extent they rest themselves or their horses; and it is important to realize that the horse gets a "hold" every time it is standing their tied to a tree waiting for its rider. Smart riders plan it so they tie their horses up somewhere where it can rest well, and eat or drink if necessary. When Carol Ruprecht and I did the 75 RAT at Swanton, our horse spent approximately 3 1/2 to 4 hours standing "tied" at a vet check where it could eat and drink to its hearts content. _I_ spent about an hour and a half at the vet checks eating and resting (I tried to do most of my drinking on the trail). And there was no time that at least one of the three team members was proceeding down the trail. It is up to the riders to manage all aspects of their horse's care and plan the necessary rest for the horse themselves rather than expecting ride management to do it for them. Incidentally, in addition to the 3 1/2 to 4 hours that the horse spent "tied" at a vet check, considering how much time each of us spent riding and each of us spent running between ties, the horse also spent 3 1/2 to 4 hourse tied to a tree somewhere out on the trail. kat Orange County, Calif. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
