If I might be so bold as to quote from Julie Suhr's wonderful book
(Ten Feet Tall, Still)...."The excitement of the start is
over and as I cross the valley floor, I see an occasional rider pulled over, an
obvious sign of a problem. Lame horse? A tied up horse? Or
maybe it is just a tack adjustment, changing the length of the stirrup or
rearranging a slipped saddle pad. I hope so for, you see, we are
all united this day. Young and old, rich and poor bonded by a common
goal---Auburn (read, "the Finish").
