[RC] Peruvian gaits - Marinera

Having ridden Peruvian horses thousands of miles I have to put in a good word for them.  I cannot remember ever being uncomfortable on one.  I do not think their four beat gait and the greater lift of the front feet required any more energy than used by a trotting horse.  My Peruvians were trail horses and would not have done well in the show ring where a more exaggerated gait is expected.

Riding four different Peruvian horses in Peru this spring, I did not find that they were as comfortable as those I owned. I think any gaited horses vary in smoothness as do any non-gaited horses. There are smooth Arabians and rough Arabians and so it is with all the different breeds. I did find the Peruvians to be more sure footed than any of the other breeds I have ridden. Julie Suhr
