Re: [RC] Gaited horse in LD - Peter HarperMary Ann Spencer said "ps. Seems to me we need to keep track of the use of the gaited horse in endurance." Mary Ann, With the help of Mike M's I was able to look and the number of different breeds participating in endurance. Mike provided the number of horses by breed participating in AERC endurance for the 2003 and 2004 ride seasons. I sorted the list by predominantly gaited breeds. In 2003 1.9% of the horses participating in endurance were from a gaited breeds. In 2004 2.2% of the horses participating in endurance were from a gaited breed. 0.3% may not sound like much but if you compare the growth of gaited compared to the overall growth of all breeds you'll see the a Gaited grew 28.2% year on year while the overall growth for all breeds was 7.7% over the same period. I plan on looking at the 2005 ride season to see if the trend continues. You make some very good points why gaited horses are growing in popularity. You don't have to give up your dream of Tevis either. Sue Waltz has completed two Tevis' on her Kentucky Mountain Horse Raven. With more people riding gaited horses and investing the necessary training time I expect you'll see more Tevis riders in the future.
