An elevator ride has to be sanctioned with AERC as such. You can elevate from one distance to the next distance. For instance, at my ride, the Cherokee Challenge (El), you may elevate from the 25 to the 50. You'd start with the 25s. If you feel you and your equine are ready to move up to the 50, you could tell me (the ride manager). What would have been your final check for completion in the 25 now becomes just another vet check for the 50. If criteria was 64 but 60 for completion for the 25s, your equine would only have to recover to 64 since you're now a 50. You'd get the mileage but no bonus points. You'd be completion only. The good thing is, you didn't have to commit to the 50 till you were done with the 25 and had a better feel of your equine's fitness.
Clear as mud now?
BTW...you can only elevate once. If a ride offered a 25, 35, 50, 75 and 100, you could only elevate from one distance to the next distance offered...no skipping. You could go from 50 to 75 but not 50 to 100 (since there was a 75 sanctioned). Understand?
All this stuff is in the rules. If you don't have a copy, go to www.aerc.org and click on rules. I don't remember the number but you can find it easy enough.
Hope this helps.
