Even with steady horses I always untie before working around them. The lead can be run through the ring to produce a suggestion of being tied, or you can loosely hold the lead ready to let go. The beauty of a round pen, or in my case a relatively small square corral, is that the horse can be loose, run away but still not get free. Most of the time scared horses, even if you are right next to them, will move away. Safer for all concerned.

By the way, I hate cross ties. If I had my way, I would remove each and every one for every barn in the country, period no exceptions. Even for detailed grooming, you can teach a horse to stand quietly. It is much safer.
