[RC] Shoeing without stress - Ranelle RubinFor those of you who do not want to hobble and drop your horse to the ground, try Tranquil from Dynamite. It is an herbal relaxant that wears off within about 15-20 min. I sprayed about 20 sprays onto a handful of flakes of hay. We feed a grass hay with about 25% alfalfa, so the horses are always trying to get the alfalfa out of it. You can spray directly into the mouth, but my guy would have none of that. I started with a 5 yr old who had only had shoes a few times and was about to get me fired from my beloved shoer. He would not stand still at all, never struck out, but jumped all over the place. I kept doing it until he relaxed. Funny, today, the shoer was out to replace a shoe and tune up both horses, and he stood perfectly still, without any Tranquil. Each time I have used less and less and now I think we are done with it. I did use quite a bit the first 3 or 4 shoeings though. I probably had dosed him 5 or 6 times over an hour with about 20 sprays each time. Best $$ I ever spent on "training". I am not a distributor, but will be happy to put you in touch with mine if you don't have one!
