Re: [RC] Stream crossings and training - Barbara McCraryWhile introducing a new horse to our trails, a few years ago, we came to a small wooden bridge across a deep little gulch. It was only about 12 feet long, adequately wide, no side rails or any edging of any sort. Most horses walk across it without problems. This particular horse wasn't going to go, or to follow. So I dismounted, unhooked my rein, and re-hooked it as an 11-foot lead. I was well across the bridge when the horse made a mad dash, slammed into me, and threw me against a very large and unforgiving tree. I wasn't damaged, except for discomfort, but it taught me a lesson. There must have been a better way to handle that situation. Eventually, I sent the horse back to the seller, as he never learned not to repeat the same dangerous behavior each time I encountered a problem. I had him for a year and never made any progress.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sisu West Ranch" <ranch@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, August 09, 2005 7:33 AM Subject: [RC] Stream crossings and training "...decided to just get off and lead Him thru ..." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
